You Never Know When! – Flood Statistics
In 2016, the National Flood Insurance Program, or NFIP, reported 59,332 losses were paid out by their organization. There were more losses nationally in 2016 than in 2013-2015 combined. Michigan bucked this national trend, as the state only had 123 reported losses paid out from Oct 2015 to Sep 2016, which was below then mean average of the rest of the country. This is partially due to the mild winters we had in the state, which resulted in lower amounts of precipitation for the state and the Midwest region as a whole. In a normal winter, our state would have likely had a considerable amount more in claims for floods and or water damage claims through the NFIP as well as other sources.
